Foundation vs Higher GCSE Maths: what is the difference?

Understand the purpose of tiers and the questions to discuss with your teacher.

One idea.
A little clearer.

Two tiers, one important conversation

For GCSE Maths courses using the 9–1 grading system in England, Foundation and Higher tiers cover different ranges of demand. Your school or exam centre can tell you which qualification and tier you are taking.

Foundation normally targets grades 1–5. Higher targets grades 4–9, with a grade 3 available in specified circumstances. Always check your awarding organisation's current qualification information; grading arrangements are not the same for every UK qualification.

The difference is not only the grade range

Both tiers assess important mathematical knowledge and problem-solving. Higher includes additional content and more demanding questions. Foundation provides a different balance of question demand.

A tier should not be treated as a label for your potential. The practical question is which exam entry fits your current understanding, your goals and the advice of the people teaching your course.

What to ask your teacher

Tier decisions should be made with your school or exam centre, using more than a single practice score. A tutor can help you understand topics, but does not replace the centre's responsibility for exam entry.

  • Which tier am I currently being taught and entered for?
  • What evidence is used to review that decision?
  • Which topics should I prioritise next?
  • When are the relevant entry or review deadlines?

Use the right grade boundaries

Grade boundaries depend on the awarding organisation, qualification, tier and exam series. Do not assume that a fixed percentage always corresponds to the same grade.

When reviewing a practice paper, use the matching published boundaries. The grade calculator on this site uses boundaries you supply; it does not predict future boundaries or provide an official result.
