GCSE Maths exam preparation guide
Prepare your methods, your equipment and your approach to exam-day questions.
A little clearer.
Check the practical details
Confirm dates, arrival times, equipment and exam instructions with your school or exam centre. General advice online should not replace the instructions for your own qualification.
If you use a calculator, become comfortable with the functions allowed for your course. Check the centre's rules rather than assuming every calculator or item is permitted.
Practise the exam skills as well as the topics
Exam preparation involves reading the question, deciding on a method, setting out working and checking the result. Include these habits in ordinary practice so they feel familiar.
Work with relevant papers and mark schemes. When reviewing an answer, look for the reasoning that earned marks rather than only the final number.
- Read the full question before calculating.
- Label diagrams and include units where needed.
- Keep intermediate values accurate; follow the requested rounding instructions.
- Make working clear enough to follow.
Have a sensible approach to time
Practising under appropriate time conditions can help you notice where you slow down. Use that information to review a method or make a plan for moving between questions.
If a question is not making progress, consider leaving your working clearly and returning to it later. Follow the paper's instructions and give yourself a chance to attempt the remaining questions.
Ask for help before the last minute
Identify the questions that repeatedly feel unclear and bring them to your teacher or tutor. Asking a specific question makes it easier to work on the underlying difficulty.
Preparation cannot guarantee a particular grade. The goal is to use practice thoughtfully and approach the exam with a clearer understanding of what to do.
